What is it about?

We investigated how adult weight in Brazil has changed over time, from the 1970s to the present day. We pooled data from many other studies that measured people's weight in different regions and times. We find that more and more people are overweight or obese, whether they are men or women.

Why is it important?

Excess weight is a public health issue that can cause many complications for people, such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and some types of cancer. Moreover, being overweight can affect people’s quality of life, self-esteem and well-being. Therefore, more actions are needed to prevent and treat excess weight, such as promoting healthy eating habits, encouraging physical activity and providing adequate medical care to those who need it.

Perspectives

Our article can assist public managers in planning and implementing programs and actions for food and nutrition security that are appropriate for the reality of each Brazilian context. Moreover, we hope that the article will raise society’s awareness of the risks of being overweight and the importance of healthy eating and regular physical activity.
