What is it about?

The paper deals with the issue of 3D display of virtual geographical maps. In the study we have compared two different types o 3D visualization (real 3d and pseudo 3d) with respect to human ability to identify altitudes in interactive and static virtual 3D geovisualizations.

Why is it important?

The empirical evidence supported previous claims that the stereoscopic real 3D visualization worsen the human performance efficiency when interacting with virtual 3D geovisualizations and suggested the real 3D visualization technologies redundant and potentially problematic in applied fields.

Perspectives

The study represents robust and conclusive evidence, that the real 3D visualization is disadvantageous and rather unpromising technology in the field of geographic visualization.
