What is it about?
We have performed femtosecond laser induced breakdown spectroscopic studies on a series of energetic molecules using both nanosecond (long) and femtosecond (ultrashort) laser pulses. We tried to correlate the observed spectral features in the LIBS data to the molecular structure. Such studies help us find mechanisms to distinguish explosive molecules from others.

Why is it important?
Explosives detection is an important field of research in present days. LIBS is one potential technique for detecting explosives at a stand-off distance. Such detailed studies enable to us to identify the mechanisms for explosives detection.
