What is it about?

A comparison of Laurence Sterne's novel with that of the foremost comic novel in Germany of the eighteenth century. While Theodor Gottlieb von Hippel (1741-1796) was strongly influenced by "The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy," for example in combining the sublime and the ridiculous, his "Lebensläufe" goes its own way when it comes to narrative technique.

Why is it important?

This essay suggests a way of viewing Hippel as being more significant than the many epigones of Sterne in Germany.

Perspectives

Hippel's novel is an underrated masterpiece that deserves wider attention than it has received.
