What is it about?

Special education and general education teachers can collaboratively plan their curriculum, instruction, and assessment to improve outcomes for student students with and without severe disabilities. The process of collaborative planning through the teaching and learning method of service-learning are described through the illustrative example of The Cookbook Project. In this project, students with and without severe disabilities collaborated during an inclusive service-learning project to create photo-based cookbooks to provide to community organizations while working together to address the curriculum and individualized learning goals.

Why is it important?

Service-learning is a flexible teaching approach that can support inclusive education and facilitate collaboration between special education and general education teachers to better meet the individual needs of diverse learners.

Perspectives

This article is based on my experiences as a high school special education teacher searching for ways to promote the inclusion of students with disabilities in the school community. The Cookbook Project described in the article describes the beginning point of my journey to understand service-learning as a method to promote inclusive education.
