Focusing on what matters to carers improves their outcomes, but can be difficult to do in practice. This article considers what helps keep the focus on carer priorities in carer support organisations

Why is it important?

This article is based on research evidence over many years from several countries. It makes a clear case for engaging carers in conversations that help them to understand their own caring situation better, whilst also helping carer support organisations to understand each individual carer's circumstances and make better decisions about support. it also makes a clear case for how organisations can best support practitioners to engage effectively with carers to achieve outcomes that matter to those carers.

Perspectives

I was fortunate to work with research colleagues from Sweden and Canada on this evidence review. We share a long term commitment to improving outcomes for carers. This evidence review helped us to better understand some of the tensions practitioners wrestle with, and how to better support carers conversations that can really make a difference
