What is it about?

There are a variety of reasons why horses may need to be restricted to a stable for example, injury, wound management or dietary needs. This level of restriction can be stressful for horses which can impact how well they heal and can increase the risk of injury to both horse and handler. This paper reviews the literature to offer real life recommendations to the stable and management which can help meet the horses behavioural needs and improve welfare by reducing stress.

Why is it important?

Adaptation of the stable and management practises can help reduce stress for the horse on box rest. Often these adaptions could be easily implemented by an owner and could help reduce behaviour such as aggression or rebound behaviours when the horse leaves the stable for limited exercise.

Perspectives

Offering owners knowledge about different management practises and assessing how they can affordable and practically alter their stable and management could make a significant impression on many horses welfare for 23 out of 24 hours a day.
