What is it about?

In England, the emergency services including A&E have been overwhelmed by rising demand which is far in excess of that predicted by demographic change. The trends show evidence for spurts of growth which defy current explanations.

Why is it important?

It is very easy to formulate all manner of explanations as to why emergency health care demand may be rising, however, the actual trends tell a story which is at variance with current 'explanations'.

Perspectives

Correct data analysis is fundamental to understanding why things behave the way they do. Firmly held beliefs can blind the analysis of trends as evidence can be rejected on the basis that it conflicts with what we 'know', see http://www.hcaf.biz/2010/Publications_Full.pdf
