What is it about?

On/off switching leads to extended periods of alternating higher or lower admissions or bed occupancy. This curious behavior arises in the presence of an external effector (the switching agent). Evidence for on/off switching is seen in both acute and mental health bed occupancy and can be seen in bed occupancy data from 2011 onward.

Why is it important?

In order to fully understand occupancy pressures, it is, therefore, necessary to identify the effector rather than assuming that other issues may be the cause of the 'problems'.
