Understanding growth in emergency admissions

What is it about?

While it is generally acknowledged that emergency admissions are rising it is not widely appreciated that growth is restricted to a number of specialties. There has been huge growth in 'admissions' into specialty Accident & Emergency which is mainly due to increasing numbers of assessment and observation units. Much of the growth is same day stay, especially for those under the age of 55.
