What is it about?

While influenza-like illness is an important measure of morbidity it is weakly related to mortality. Hence periods of high death can occur in the absence of any influenza-like illness.

Why is it important?

This is important because unexplained periods of higher than expected deaths are occurring which cannot be attributed to common pathogens such as influenza.

Perspectives

The factors regulating the trends in death are far less understood than may appreciate. Unexplained periods of higher death dominate the trends in all countries, see http://www.hcaf.biz/2010/Publications_Full.pdf
