What is it about?

Non-medical prescribing is the term used to describe prescribing by a healthcare professional other than a doctor or dentist. A range of healthcare professionals can become non-medical prescribers, when they have successfully completed an accredited non-medical prescribing programme. This paper reviews the literature on blended approaches to delivering postgraduate education to healthcare professionals. The aim of the review was to gather information on the teaching methods used and consider any reported effects on assessment performance and student satisfaction. The purpose was to explore ways of improving performance in assessments and student satisfaction.

Why is it important?

Many approved education institutions have adopted more permanent blended approaches to their non-medical prescribing programmes since the Covid-19 pandemic. Given the widespread adoption of blended approaches to delivery, it seems prudent to explore the question: what is the most effective ‘blend’? The insights gained from this review could inform the way that non-medical prescribing programmes are delivered.

Perspectives

A key finding was a gap in the literature! However, I gained some insights that could enhance education for non-medical prescribers.
