What is it about?

This article is part of a calculation skills continued professional development series for independent non-medical prescribers. The cephalosporins are broad-spectrum antibiotics, with first generation cephalosporins initially used in the 1960’s and have been developed and refined to current fifth generation. Within the classification of antibiotics, cephalosporins are Beta-lactams, a group which also includes penicillin. The article covers the pharmacological properties of the cephalosporins including their common clinical uses. There are calculations skills question and answer activities to support practitioner self-assessment.

Why is it important?

Continuing professional development remains a fundamental aspect of high-quality clinical practice for nurses, midwives, and allied health professionals. With the decreasing availability of resources for formal CPD activities, this series of brief, self-assessment numeracy exercises allows practitioners to evaluate their calculation skills at their convenience and review the material as needed.

Perspectives

This series of CPD calculation skill activities supports my professional development as an educator and independent nurse prescriber. Reviewing medications and the pharmacological management of conditions which are not within the sphere of my professional practice broadens my depth of knowledge and informs my teaching acumen.
