What is it about?

A review of the literatures describing the interaction between Sildenafil (Viagra) and GTN, looking at why the administration of GTN is contraindicated in the presence of sildenafil in the past 24 hours. Also looks at the barriers paramedics face when trying to facilitate an environment to ask this sometimes awkward question and the potential fatal consequences if this is not done.

Why is it important?

When GTN is administered to a patient whom has had sildenafil within the past 8 hours, what ever the drop in blood pressure normally because of GTN can be quadrupled. This can obviously be fatal for some patients.

Perspectives

This question is rarely asked in the pre hospital setting for many reasons. I thought it important to explain why this question should be asked and the potential consequences of not doing so on patient care
