What is it about?
The article highlights linkage between mental health disorders prevalence and non-adherence to immunosuppressive drugs in kidney transplant population. This link is important as adherence is crucial for graft outcomes and survival. Mental health disorders prevalence was considerable in this studied cohort revealing that screening and treatment for these alterations must be approached in a biopsychosocial, interdisciplinary, and focused on patient´s treatment preferences way since medical treatment by itself is not good enough for assuring good healthcare outcome in kidney transplant population. What is already known about this subject? • Mental health disorders in kidney transplant population improve after kidney transplant when compared with dialysis population, however they are still prevalent in this population and have an impact in patient and graft survival. • This study needed to be done to quantify the actual prevalence of mental health disorders and its linkage with immunosuppressive adherence, crucial for graft survival. • Another fact that highlights the need of this study was to identify treatment preferences and need for psychological treatments of this population as it is known that to incorporate patient´s treatment preferences in clinical practice improves health outcomes.

Why is it important?
• The article highlights mental health disorders prevalence and linkage with non-adherence to immunosuppressive drugs in kidney transplant population. • This study reveals treatment preferences and needs claimed by kidney transplant patients for psychological interventions, being most wished “face to face individual/group interventions by a psychologist with expertise in renal diseases derived from Nephrology department. • This study highlights that screening and treatment for mental health disorders must be approached in a biopsychosocial, interdisciplinary, and focused on patient´s treatment preferences since medical treatment by itself is not good enough for assuring good healthcare outcome in kidney transplant population.
