What is it about?

First contact physiotherapists provide specialist musculoskeletal management within primary care. No studies have yet explored first contact physiotherapist services in Wales. Consequently, little is known about the experience of working as a first contact physiotherapist in Wales.

Why is it important?

The findings show that leadership and strategies to increase interprofessional collaboration are required to increase role clarity of the first contact physiotherapist and ensure service efficacy. There is a need in Wales for a professional development, mentorship and governance framework to ensure sustainability and efficacy of first contact physiotherapy services.

Perspectives

This project was based on my MSc dissertation at Cardiff University. I hope it can be a vehicle for change within Wales and show others that completion of MSc projects can lead to publication. I can not emphasise how helpful my co-author, Dr Paul Gill, who was my dissertation tutor, was throughout this process.
