What is it about?
There is not much exploration of what healthcare professionals know about occupational therapy in the United States. This study explored what 202 healthcare professionals know about occupational therapy in the United States, and the common misconceptions the have about it. The study also explored whether years of experience and the field of practice/study can influence knowledge about occupational therapy. An Arabic questionnaire addressing the knowledge base about occupational therapy was cross-culturally adapted into English.

Why is it important?
healthcare professionals need to have an accurate knowledge about the unique role of occupational therapists and the unique way they can contribute with in the delivery of healthcare. This is necessary to ensure the delivery of comprehensive and quality care for all clients, to prevent inappropriate referrals, and to promote retention and job satisfaction of occupational therapists.
Perspectives
Occupational therapists need to actively market their profession to make it visible. They need to focus on establishing and building interprofessional channels of communication and forms of work with other healthcare professionals.
