What is it about?
Peri-anaesthetic management of thoracic trauma in dogs and cats can be challenging, due to the likelihood of both respiratory compromise and pain associated with sustained injuries. Many medications and techniques used in anaesthesia depress the respiratory system, which can cause further complications.

Why is it important?
The aims of this article are to discuss anaesthetic and analgesic management of these cases, with reference to available evidence in both veterinary and human literature. Pathophysiology, appropriate drug choices and techniques are outlined. A case example of a dog with thoracic wall trauma following a dog bite is included.
