What is it about?
This article is about the experience that two nursing students had in India at Caritas Hospital . The placement offered us the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. We learned a range of new clinical skills and became familiar with several medications that were new to us. This exposure made us understand the universality of compassionate care and broadened our understanding of global healthcare practices.

Why is it important?
It gives more insight on the skills, knowledge, culture and experience that we gained during the placement. It is important because it made us realise that the common goal of nursing is providing compassionate care despite the country.
Perspectives
I hope this article encourages more students to undertake an international placement. I gained new communication skills like non-verbal communication due to the language barrier. I enjoyed learning about the culture and understanding how to care for people with different needs.

This international placement gave me a deeper understanding for culturally sensitive practice and showed me how care is shaped by local beliefs, family roles and other expectations. I also witnessed differences in responding to cardiac arrests and how the emergency department functioned compared with the UK. Over the four weeks, I gained insight into how healthcare systems can vary internationally and realised the value of being flexible and responsive as a nurse. I hope this encourages other students to explore different healthcare settings and consider doing international placement.
