What is it about?
Surgical wounds are common in healthcare and require accurate assessment and efficient management by healthcare professionals. It is also important for anyone that goes through any surgery to be aware of general wound management principles, potential complications, how to prevent these and how to manage the wounds in the community. This paper outlines best practices in the management of surgical wounds for healthcare workers and the general public.

Why is it important?
The number of surgeries performed each year, and consequently people having surgeries which result in wounds that need efficient care keeps increasing. The potential for surgical wound complications such as infection is increased through inefficient surgical wound management. For best outcomes, knowledge and skills of best practices for surgical wound management in partnership with awareness of preventative measures for the general public is critical.
Perspectives
I hope this article serves as a one-stop resource for readers who need the knowledge and awareness of how to manage surgical wounds and leads to improved outcomes for patients. The information can be found in various policies and guidelines but from experience, I know it is hard to find and read all policies and it is easy to miss recommended guidance.
