What is it about?

Hidradenitis Suppurativa causes draining wounds which require a significant and regular wound care regime. Today, patients are self-managing using products that are not suitable for areas such as the armpits and groin. Traditional dressing products often move, leak, fall off and cause adhesive skin damage, imposing a significant burden on patients.

Why is it important?

Awareness of the condition and the wound care requirement is important, however it is often overlooked. Today there are no guidance documents and no standard of care for HS patients. This article sets the criteria for HS wound care, with a hope that these will be adopted and incorporated into formal guidance documents for the overall management of hidradenitis suppurativa.

Perspectives

This publication is important is it highlights the personal struggle of people living with hidradenitis suppurativa in terms of wound management. Hidradenitis Suppurativa is an incredibly devastating disease to live with, and patients, for the most part are left to manage these wounds unguided, in the home setting. Providing patients with the right tools to manage their wounds, will not only empower patients to self-manage effectively, but will improve their quality of life.
