What is it about?

This article explores how using simulated learning, like role-playing scenarios or virtual patient interactions, can help mental health nursing students to develop a stronger sense of who they are as professionals and solidify the values important to their future role. Through these simulation-based experiences, students are encouraged to practice communication, empathy, ethical decision-making, and other core nursing behaviors in a safe, controlled setting.

Why is it important?

Educators can use these considerations to support improved simulation methods that prepare students not just in clinical skills, but also in the personal and ethical qualities essential for high-quality mental health care.

Perspectives

This experience reinforced our belief that professional identity in mental health nursing is not simply taught but cultivated through experience. We have seen students grow in confidence and self-awareness when given the freedom to practice in a safe, simulated environment. For us, simulation is more than a technical exercise, it is a space where values such as empathy, respect, and authenticity can be explored in a safe and supportive environment.
