What is it about?

Retention and integration of overseas nurses is crucial for sustainability of healthcare services. Study findings led to the creation of a model highlighting important elements that can be used by management and policy makers to enhance retention of foreign workers.

Why is it important?

The process of moving to and working in a new country can be challenging, so it is important to establish formal support networks for nurses who migrate from overseas. Healthcare organisations and policy makers should prioritise culturally sensitive mechanisms to support nurses from overseas with language acquisition, training and social integration.

Perspectives

I hope this article sheds further light into the complexity and challenges faced by nurses leaving their family behind and travelling across the globe to seek new work opportunities. They need not only be seen as an extra pair of hands to alleviate the shortages in human resources, but as humans who can bring a different perspective to the workplace, additional experience/ knowledge and enhance our own cultural experience.
