What is it about?
Presented is the first synoptic review of the topic of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) as an environmental concern. The sources, fate, and ecotoxicity of PPCPs as trace environmental contaminants were examined. The possibility of subtle ecological effects (such as behavioral change) was postulated for the first time as a potential concern.

Why is it important?
The acronym "PPCPs" was coined in this article, simply as shorthand for the term "pharmaceuticals and personal care products," which was also first presented in this review. This was one of the 20 most-cited papers in the fields of environment and ecology during the period 1998-2008: http://archive.sciencewatch.com/inter/aut/2008/08-oct/08oct20PaprsENV. As of 2014, it had received over 2,700 citations.
