What is it about?
Several HTS run over the past few years have identified several FDA approved drugs with activity against Ebola virus in vitro and in vivo. The goal of this Opinion piece was to raise awareness of these compounds and perform similarity searches with them to potentially suggest other compounds worth testing.

Why is it important?
Because several relatively accessible drugs like chloroquine and other drugs could be obtained in Africa and tested as a last resort in Ebola patients. We are not aware that any of these compounds have been tested in humans against Ebola virus.
Perspectives
This is important as I think the HTS small molecule drug discovery work was initially ignored in favor of vaccine and other biologics. Accessing these FDA approved drugs that have a good safety profile and in some cases decades of use for other diseases, would make them obvious choices to trial in future outbreaks.
