What is it about?
The amount of expression of certain genes can be used to determine if a person has received too much exposure to damaging gamma radiation. This study determines which genes are important by deriving a combination of genes that form a signature that accurately predicts radiation exposure.

Why is it important?
Radiation accidents and overexposure can occur in power plants, other industrial contexts, and hospitals. Short term, high level exposure can impact many organ systems and can lead to death. Long term, radiation can increase cancer risk.
