Why is it important?

The role of Chloride on the outcomes of patients in ICU only recently has been recognized. Some of chloride disturbances are iatrogenic and counted as a modifiable risk factor for AKI and death.

Perspectives

The knowledge in this field still needs to grow. We have only scratched the surface but further basic and clinical investigations are needed to determine the significance of chloride in outcome, its metabolic pathways and the ways its disturbances could be avoided or treated.
