What is it about?
Due to the absence of a fully-fledged synaptonemal complex it had previously been hypothesized that fission yeast meiosis is evolutionary primitive. Here we identify conserved meiotic chromosome axis protein in fission yeast, which demonstrates that fission yeast meiosis more likely represents a derived, but simplified, evolutionary state.
