What is it about?

Important deficit of maternal thyroid hormones during pregnancy is well known to affect future children's intelligence and neurological performances. We have investigated such aspects in children 9-10 year-old, and found that a minor deficit of maternal thyroid hormones did not have serious effects.

Why is it important?

It is important to discuss whether women should systematically undergo a thyroid function test before pregnancy, and promptly correct thyroid dysfunction to prevent negative effects on children. This paper showed that minor deficit of thyroid hormones did not significantly affect children, therefore does not support a systematic screening of thyroid function before pregnancy.

Perspectives

Future studies are needed to definitely solve this issue and provide clear guidance about this topic.
