What is it about?
Maintenance dialysis adult patients who express a higher serum Klotho level do have a greater survival and less cardiovascular events

Why is it important?
Survival is strongly reduced by kidney disease. Main determinants of mortality are cardiovascular diseases and phosphocalcic disorders. Klotho is a protein secreted by the kidneys and exerts survival advantages. When kidneys are impaired, Klotho production is reduced and this may impact on patients survival. Experimental studies have convincingly demonstrated the deleterious effect of a lack of Klotho. Here we confirm these experimental findings in patients with severe renal disease.
