What is it about?
We demonstrate in a large animal that brown adipose tissue mitochondrial uncoupling protein is highly abundant in sternal adipose tissue and could contribute to the thermogenic response to feeding.

Why is it important?
The extent to which sternal fat expansion, and particularly uncoupling protein 1 abundance, can be modulated in early life may inform new strategies to manipulate energy balance, especially following feeding or in response to chronic food restriction during adulthood.
