What is it about?

The chapter presents the achievements in gene transfer in potato crop and related Solanum species and points out some examples based on our own results on the transfer of reporter gene gfp or coat protein gene from PVY in a hairpin construct that produces iRNA for PVY post-transcriptional inactivation.

Why is it important?

It is important for students and academics interested in this field but also for practical applications of genetic engineering in potato improvement.

Perspectives

I hope this article helps other researchers to stay up to date in plant genetic transformation, particularly in potato crop, For me personally it was a pleasure to write it because I was struggling long time to develop different biotechnological ways to improve crops and potato is a very important security crop which surely will increase in importance around the globe as food, feed, energy source and not at last as a source of health promoting compounds.
