What is it about?

In order to use sequences as molecular clocks, we need to quantify the different rates of clicks at different sites. One first would empirically measure the variation of the substitution rates over sites, and then use mathematical models to capture the essence of the rate variation.

Why is it important?

This quantification of the rate heterogeneity over sites would increase the accuracy of reading time from the molecular clock.

Perspectives

Devils are in details, and anyone who has studied the molecular clock in detail tend to find things too messy to be excited about.
