What is it about?

Lipids yield much information about the human ocular surface, including presence of inflammation, stability of the tears etc.

Why is it important?

It is pretty acceptable to use either capillary tube or schirmers paper strips for lipid collection.

Perspectives

Amphipathic lipids such as OAHFAs are important for tear stability. The polar groups interact with the water layer of the tear whereas the nonpolar groups interact with other long chain lipids.
