What is it about?
In this paper I review some of the classic granular effective medium models routinely used to link the elastic response of conventional reservoirs (compressional and shear wave velocitites, density) to their rock properties (porosity, mineralogy, saturations). I show how, through the introduction of a few additional parameters linked to a compositional or textural property of the rock, those models can be extended and combined into more generic models applicable to a broader range of rock formations.

Why is it important?
The extended models offer an increased flexibility for calibration to log data. The new parameters also facilitates the simulation of geologic variations away from the wells which can be used to understand features observed in 3D seismic data.
