What is it about?
Surface reflection seismic inversion techniques are currently applied by the oil and gas industry for mapping rock physical properties. We have shown that poststacked waveform seismic inversion increases the velocity resolution when is constrained with well logs and lithology. We implemented an inversion algorithm to invert seismic data, and as an example we applied the algorithm to dataset from the Waggoner Ranch oil reservoir located in northeast Texas.

Why is it important?
The seismic interpreter can map flow units saturated with hydrocarbons that are undetected with currents techniques. The interpreter shouldn’t fully rely with current techniques, such as seismic impedance inversion for delineating pay zones in oil reservoirs.
