What is it about?

Mud diapirs are unusual structural features in rift-type sedimentary basins, such as those that occur in the Recôncavo basin (NE Brazil). This work shows the mapping and characterization of these diapirs through the use of 3D seismic data, which play an important role in the local petroleum system.

Why is it important?

Our work is the first 3D seismic mapping of the mud diapirs from the Recôncavo basin and these diapirs are one of the only two documented occurrences of mud diapirs in Brazil.

Perspectives

Working with the mud diapirs of the Recôncavo basin was a great challenge, mainly because these diapirs have been poorly studied and there is few material in the literature about them. Knowing them well is necessary for a better understanding of the development of this basin and its petroleum system.
