What is it about?
This paper provides a sedimentological interpretation of part of the Pearl River Mouth Basin in China. The basin developed as a rift basin with sedimentation controlled by rift faulting resulting in a combination of transverse and longitudinal sedimentation patterns. The sedimentation patterns are partly defined by well control but have then been extended across the basin by using interpretation of detailed 3D seismic data. The facies delineated include fluvial, delta, subaqueous fans and shallow and deep lake deposits. The aerial extent of more permeable facies povide useful targets for further petroleum exploration.

Why is it important?
The use of the seismic inversion method has allowed more accurate facies mapping within the basin and thus provided much better targets for future petroleum exploration. This paper provides
