What is it about?

Our goal was to develop a simple technique suitable for studying the transport properties of low-permeability rock samples at extremely low flow rates. We also want to warn the experimental community to consider possible gas clogging when studying the nonlinearity of fluid flows in low-permeable rocks.

Why is it important?

Conventional methods for studying fluid flows in porous rocks are poorly suited for studying their permeability when approaching zero flow rates because of the lack of flow meter accuracy. In our study, we paid great attention to the purity of the experiment in comparison with routine measurements of permeability.

Perspectives

It was a challenge to elaborate a precise technic to measure fluid flow at very low pressure gradients, and now we have the method, which can be used in the future research. For low-permeable rocks, the estimation of reservoir permeability without taking into account studied nonlinearity of the flow can lead to significant errors, downgrade the reservoir productivity estimation and underestimation of stationary oil zone appearances.
