What is it about?

Major depression is known to increase suicide risk. However, the behavioural outcome of major depression and suicidal tendencies are dissimilar. In this work, we attempted to identify potential genetic basis of this difference. Preliminary yet intriguing observations were made, wherein a set of immunological genes showed opposite patterns of differential expression in suicide and depression.

Why is it important?

Many antidepressants prescribed for the treatment of major depression are known to have suicidal tendencies as adverse effects of the medication. Not much is known about the molecular interconnections underlying such clinical observations. Hence, a clearer understanding of these molecular connections would be necessary.

Perspectives

Our current understanding of the unique molecular underpinnings of suicidality and MDD is limited. This study provides preliminary insights into the molecular alterations uniquely associated with the two conditions.
