What is it about?

Doctors and researchers are supposed to report the results of their clinical studies. Medical writers are professional writers with a scientific or medical background who can help doctors to report the results of clinical studies. We wanted to find out if medical writers improve the quality of the reports that are written about clinical study results. We also wanted to learn whether medical writers can write reports more quickly than doctors and researchers can write them. To find out, we searched for published reports of clinical studies. We then compared the reports that had been written with help from medical writers with the reports of studies that had been written without any medical writing support. We found that medical writers can help researchers to report their results more quickly and accurately, with these reports including more of the key information that doctors need to know.

Why is it important?

When patients or members of the public take part in clinical studies, the researchers involved in the study owe it to them to report the results quickly and accurately, without missing anything important out. However, sometimes doctors are busy with research and looking after patients, so they do not have enough time to write reports. Our study shows that medical writers can help doctors to report clinical study results. The fast and accurate reporting of clinical study results will help other doctors to learn about new treatments and to use them correctly.

Perspectives

The results from our study help to build confidence in the quality of clinical study reports that are written with help from medical writers.
