What is it about?

The research explains how SMEs can play an import role in the triple helix context. The institutional ecosystem represented by universities, governmental bodies and typically larger enterprises noted as the triple helix for enabling innovation can get fresh insights from SMEs. However, this requires 'knowledge spaces' where the SMEs can meet with larger enterprises for development of organisational learning to support innovation.

Why is it important?

SMEs represent a very interesting source for innovation as they are flexible and have the ability to pursue new ideas through practical application. It means that SMEs are much faster in implementation of innovation and faster to adapt to the solutions, which can be succesful and useful for customers.

Perspectives

SMEs can add a practical perspective to the triple helix ecosystem to enable innovation. The challenge is to create enough knowledge space for SMEs to participate and larger enterprises to embrace the SME activities in their own organisation.
