What is it about?

We describe the methods for a systematic review and meta-analysis of health state utility values for diabetic retinopathy. As no clear guidance is available for such studies, we also discuss a number of methodological issues.

Why is it important?

Model-based economic evaluation relies on representative parameters for health-related quality of life. Systematic review and meta-analysis is a means of considering all available evidence to inform model parameters and can reduce biased estimates of cost-effectiveness. A meta-analysis of health state utility values for diabetic retinopathy has never been conducted.

Perspectives

Lots of model-based evaluations have been conducted for interventions for diabetic retinopathy, and nearly all of them use just a couple of references for health state utility values. These studies might not be relevant to the modern decision context and there may be better sources available, so a review and meta-analysis is timely. I hope that our study will help to inform the development of guidance for future studies of this nature.
