What is it about?
We asked 74 doctors who had referred patients to involuntary psychiatric admission who had detected the patient (ie identified that the patient was in need of admission). In most cases it was other branches of the health services, the patient’s family or the police (in that order). We also asked doctors what they expected from the admission: more than half expected medication to be started and less than half that the patient was cared for.

Why is it important?
We know little about why doctors refer patients to involuntary psychiatric admission. We need such knowledge in order to reduce the amount of involuntary admissions.
