Introducing newborns to breastfeeding within the first hour of delivery confers numerous benefits on mothers and babies. This study assesed the rural-urban differences in the rates and factors associated with early initiation of breastfeeding in Nigeria.

Why is it important?
Early initiation of breastfeeding (EIBF) improves the survival status of mothers and neonates. However, the rate of EIBF is low and declining in Nigeria. Previous studies have investigated the determinants of EIBF for the pooled Nigerian population. The present study examined how the rates and the determinants differ between rural and urban areas in the country.
Perspectives
This study provides further evidence which may inform policy aimed at improving EIBF in Nigeria.
