What is it about?

Heart failure is characterized by a series of adaptive changes in energy metabolism. The use of metabolomics enables the parallel assessment of a wide range of metabolites. In this study, we appraised whether metabolic changes correlate with HF severity, assessed as an impairment of functional contractility, and attempted to interpret the role of metabolic changes in determining systolic dysfunction

Why is it important?

Changes in the energy metabolism precede the deterioration of systolic function and a correlation between the efficiency in energy metabolism and systolic function was detected. Our data suggest a boosted energetic metabolism in early/compensated HF states, and a depletion of metabolic capacity that leads to a progressive systolic impairment in more severe HF cases.

Perspectives

Our findings seem to suggest the possibility: 1) of early identification of the evolution towards a more severe degree of heart failure (before clinical, echocardiographic or significative BNP levels alterations); 2) to identify a "metabolic therapy " aimed to preserve the energetic efficiency of the myocardium, delaying or stopping the progression of systolic dysfunction .
