What is it about?

Research on major health issues, including HIV and AIDS, in Africa continues to trail behind that of developed countries. This paper focuses on analysis of the literature in a specific disease area of HIV and AIDS. A 30-year bibliometric analysis of research coverage on HIV and AIDS in Lesotho was conducted to create a statistical inventory of research output on HIV and AIDS for the country and to assess the coverage of the national research agenda on HIV and AIDS. Findings indicated that despite a considerable research output on HIV and AIDS for Lesotho, there is insufficient coverage of the national research agenda in this research area. The major research gaps are in basic and preventive measures as well as national planning. Targeted funding is recommended to address the most compelling gaps.

Why is it important?

The findings of this study highlight the research areas on HIV and AIDS that need targeted funding by the relevant authorities and attention by researchers.

Perspectives

This study on its own is certainly not enough to reveal the full extent of the problem of poor research output in LMICs. More studies of this nature are needed, particularly those covering more than one country in sub Saharan Africa.
