What is it about?

This is the first case report of microsporidia keratitis diagnosed retrospectively by electron microscopy on paraffin-embedded sections of excised cornea. At the same time, this is the second case report of microsporidia keratitis after corneal endothelial transplantation, DSAEK, in the world.

Why is it important?

The ability to retrospectively use electron microscopy to diagnose microsporidia keratitis in excised corneas is useful information for cornea specialists worldwide.

Perspectives

Retrospective electron microscopic diagnosis of cases of unexplained keratitis that have undergone corneal transplantation after scar healing may help to find microsporidia keratitis. In fact, there may be more microsporidia keratitis in temperate climates than we know.
