What is it about?

We all have microbes in our respiratory airways, but it is unclear how these may affect our health. In patients that are intubated in intensive care units it is important to understand how and if these microbial communities affect their outcome during hospitalization.

Why is it important?

Respiratory airway microbes can have an important effect on patients and studying these communities and how they change can help to identify aspects of treatment and care crucial for patient recovery and health.

Perspectives

This study found that the hospital environment is important for the colonization of microbes in patients in intensive care units. This can pave the way to finding strategies to prevent unwanted outcomes and aid in patient recovery.
