What is it about?

This study investigated the impact of sarcopenia on postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). This study was motivated by the fact that recently, there have been some reports that skeletal muscle depletion (sarcopenia) influences postoperative outcomes following PD. We found that sarcopenia is in fact an independent preoperative predictor of infectious complications after PD.

Why is it important?

We believe that our study makes a significant contribution to the literature because assessing sarcopenia is simple and cost-effective, and should help clinicians to plan treatment strategies and prevent the occurrence of infectious complications in at-risk patients.
